Thanks for your interest in joining the 501st Legion, Canadian Garrison! Here’s a guide on how to get started.
First, you must be 18 years of age. If you are under the age of 18, you may not apply to the 501st Legion.

Second, you must own a movie quality costume representing one of the Imperials (the "bad guys" of Star Wars). If you own a "good guy" costume, you need to apply to our sister organization, The Rebel Legion (

The 501st Legion has very specific requirements for what defines a movie quality costume. For the requirements of a specific costume, visit the 501st Legion CRL page then research first before you buy any costume:

Once you have decided on the costume you would like to build, it's recommended that you do your research in advance. Becoming familiar with the costume requirements for that character or costume by consulting the CRL page on the 501st website is a good place to start. Some CRLs are a work in progress, so continue to check back for updates. You should also join the detachment assigned to that costume or character and interact with other members and the Detachment Leader (DL). They can help you with your research and your build. Create a build thread and chart your progress as you work on your costume. Use the feedback (and criticism) of your peers constructively to get your costume completed.

When you feel your costume meets the requirements, complete the online application located here:

Your GML will contact you once you have completed the application to ask for your submission photos. It is recommended that you put as much care and effort into taking the photos of your costume as you put into building it. You will need to submit photos of each side of your costume - 5 in all - front, back, left, right, (any helmet or head covering should be on for all those shots) and a helmet off shot. The background should be plain, such as a wall. The lighting should be good. The resolution must be high. If the photos are poor, this will delay your application. Keep in mind that the Legion considers these photos as "canon" so any non-canon accessories (such as jewelry or eyeglasses) or customization/personalization may not be present in your photos.

The GML and any other experts will judge your costume and inform you if changes are needed before you can be approved as a member. The GML will report back to you if new photos are required. In some cases, you will be asked to make adjustments to your costume.

Once the GML is satisfied that your costume meets the CRL and the photos are of an acceptable standard, they will recommend approval. The process can take up to 3 weeks or longer.
***Note that submissions made less than 4 weeks before a large convention or event may not be processed until afterward.

The LMO (Legion Membership Officer) Team is in charge of ultimately admitting all members into the 501st Legion. The GML (Garrison Membership Liaison) for each Garrison recommends approvals, although final say is with the LMO team.

Remember that the GML is here to help.
